Top Ten Topics That Instantly Make Me Pick Up a Book

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the lovely ladies over at The Broke and the Bookish

THIS WEEK'S PROMPT IS TOP TEN TOPICS THAT INSTANTLY MAKE ME PICK UP A BOOK

1. Theatre
I am more than slightly obsessed with the theatre. I love it. I love working in it; I love reading about it. If you set a book amidst some backstage drama I will pick it up. I might not like it because I'm also super picky about portrayals of my workplace, but I'll read it. I'm still waiting on a book with a really great representation of a stage manager.

2. Paris
I desperately want to visit Paris. I want to do every single stereotypical touristy thing while I'm there and then stay long enough to get beyond that. So if I see a book set in Paris, in any time period, I"m going to read it. I need to live vicariously through these fictional characters.

3. College Dorms / Boarding School
I like reading books where a group of young people are living together in close quarters away from parents for the first time. It's just pure fun for me.

4. Road Trips
The only acceptable answer to somebody asking Road Trip? is yes right? I mean it's fun, adventure, going wherever you want on the continent. There are so many things to see and do and you get to do it all with the people you're close to. That's why I love road trip books, they just present this sense of possibility, that anything can happen.

5. The Twenties
The 1920s were such a fascinating era. There was rapid change in society as economies adjusted to industrialization. There were suffragettes and social problems and on the flip side there were the flappers and Bright Young Things. I love books that explore this era for all of those reasons.

6. Canadian History
The Canadian history major in me can't help it. If a book is set in Canada in any historic period I'm going to read it. It's like my super nerdy weakness

7. Vampires and Witches
This one is pretty much a cliche by now since it was such a HUGE trend, but I can't help it. I've been drawn towards anything with vampires and witches since I started watching Buffy when it first aired. There are so many terrible ones out there, but it's almost worth it when I find one that makes me fall in love with the genre all over again.

8. Music/Musicians
I love books that explore the arts and while theatre may be my first love, music definitely factors into the equation. I just love books that follow musicians and explore their passion or even a book that just features a main characters who's as obsessed with old records as I am. Music is such a huge part of my life and I love seeing books where my passion is featured.

9. The Russian Revolution
We seem to be swinging from the arts to history for most of these, which makes sense given my background. The Russian Revolution is just another period that I find absolutely fascinating. It's horrifying and heartbreaking, as are so many parts of human history, but it's so important to learn about. I love an accurate novel that makes history accessible.

10. Moving Abroad
Moving abroad is a dream of mine. It's something I'm planning on doing within the next few years and well again, this is another example of wish fulfillment through literature.

  2. This is a great list! After seeing it on so many lists I can't believe I didn't think of boarding schools. The 20s is a good one, too.
