Top Ten Books Dealing With Tough Subjects

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the lovely ladies over at The Broke and the Bookish

THIS WEEK'S PROMPT IS TOP TEN BOOKS DEALING WITH TOUGH SUBJECTS

1. If I Stay by Gayle Forman
If I Stay made me cry more than well pretty much any book ever. It is so heartbreaking. Reading about one girl having to choose whether to live or die after her family is killed in a car crash, just wow.

2. Hand Me Down by Melanie Thorne
This one was so tough for me to read. It deals with parental neglect and what a child would do to protect a younger sibling from the same abuse. I can't imagine what it would be like to live through that. Parents are the people you're supposed to be able to trust and when it's those very same people that are a source of abuse, well, that's when words fail me.

3. Hopeless by Colleen Hoover
I don't want to go into why exactly this book wowed me, but it really did. It dealt with a difficult subject sensitively. It kind of gutted me by the end.

4. Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys
Sepetys' first novel about people trapped in Russian work camps during the Second World War is heartbreaking. It was so beautifully written and I became felt so connected to the characters that it made me feel everything.

5. Easy by Tammara Webber
I loved this book; it's a favourite of mine in large part because of the way it deals with issues surrounding sexual assault. It dealt with the issue very realistically in my opinion and it wasn't just used as a plot device to show who was bad or who was good. I really appreciated the characters different reactions and that it wasn't just about victimization after the fact. Basically, just a great book.

6. Slammed by Colleen Hoover
I couldn't help but put Hoover on my list twice this week. She has a way of writing that really gets to me. Slammed deals with the death of a parent which is a subject so close to my heart.

7. 40 Things I'd Like to Tell You by Alice Kuipers
Teen pregnancy and divorce are both dealt with in this one. It wasn't my absolute favourite novel ever mainly because I could never really connect with the main character, but I thought that the reactions were understandable and fairly realistic throughout and appreciated it for that.

Wow, you guys, I think I'm tapped out at seven right now. I actually cannot for the life of me think of three more books that I want to add to this list. I might just be exhausted! So I guess that's it for this week.

  1. I've never heard of Slammed, but I've seen it on several lists this week. Not sure if I could handle it, though.

Here's my TTT for the week. Happy reading!
